London Sterling wine funnel, 1788 – 1789.
Constructed in two parts; matching hallmarks on each.
Engraving : Script Spray monogram of original owner appears to be “WAG”

maker : William Suddell, registered with the London silversmith’s guild as “smallworker”.
Biography : Son of a wax chandler, he was apprenticed to a fishmonger before earning his freedom in 1766, and had his first silver hallmark registered in 1767.
He kept shop on Grubb Street, the center of London’s publishing and literary activity, later on Pelican Court. His “WS” mark is recorded in Grimwade (#3311); he registered similar smaller versions in 1779 and in 1788.
