SIKES HYDROMETER # 495 for testing spirits, a very early and complete example
Original brass float (very slight dent on the bulb), all original weights, each engraved with matching serial number 495. Set includes its ivory and glass thermometer ( fine condition); red satin lid liner is worn but intact, the mahogany box in fine complete condition with original hardware intact, ivory string inlays and and inlaid plaque.

Sikes' system for proofing alcohol was to became the English standard, recognized for over 100 years as the most practical for use by Customs & Excise agents.
Sikes himself died suddenly in 1803, while awaiting formal adoption of his system. His wife petitioned the right to sole manufacture for her son-in-law and nephew,, Bate, Her petition was granted in 1810 and remained in effect until 1851 when manufacture passed out of the family.
