"Thaxter & Brother, successors to John Pierce ... Manufacturers and dealers in Spectacles, Optical Instruments (etc)... 139 Washington Street ..."
According to an undated source, makers of "a wide range of instruments that may be seen in many museums ... Samuel Thaxter worked alone from 1835 to 1842, when a grandson, Samuel Thaxter Cushing, came into and took over the business until 1882 ..."

The heavy brass is engraved in the Fahrenheit scale
from 20 degrees below zero to 125 above, and engraved at 32, "FREEZ-ING"
