Frances (Fanny) Burney (1752-1840) (later known as Mme d'Arbley) novelist, diarist and playwright, published her first novel, Evelina, anonymously in 1778 at the age of 26.
When her identity became known it brought her immediate fame for its unique narrative and comic strengths. She has gained critical respect in her own right, and also foreshadows such novelists of manners with a satirical bent as Jane Austin and William Makepeace Thackeray.
Provenance and ownership history : Eliza Mary White (1794-1861) daughter of Colonel Anthony Walton White (Continental Army) and Margaret White. Her name in both volumes (Vol I in ink on title page "Eliza Mary White, June 4, 1802" & Vol II penciled ,"E.M. White" where it replaced an earlier name, mostly removed). Mary apparently received it at age 8.
