"LION OF LUCERNE" Grand Tour Brooch, Victorian, circa 1850-1880's.
A fine sculptural miniature in silver of the massive 1821 cliff carving extolled by Mark Twain in A Tramp Abroad (1880).
Wonderfully detailed, complete with engraved motto "HELVETIORUM FIDEL AC VIRTUTI ("To the Loyalty and Bravery of the Swiss") commemorating their valor during the French Revolution.
Size : 1-3/4" x 1-1/4", including the neoclassical openwork border with fleur-de-lis corners.

Original tube hinge; later safety lock; original pin stem, apparently shortened
Signed with maker's initials, struck twice on the pin stem, "A"
