San Francisco / C.W.Crocker Silver Tea & Coffee service
Five pieces of matching hollow silver, with marks of
Braverman & Levy, San Francisco, and Wood & Hughes, New York; plus a plated tray.
The coffee pot with engraved owner’s name “C.W. Crocker”*

Clark W. Crocker, born in New York, came to California “across the plains in 1850...engaged in mining ...came to Sacramento and embarked in business undertakings in partnership with his brother, the late Charles Crocker. For a time he lived in Yolo County, but returned to Sacremento (sic)...until 1875, when he removed to San Francisco”* where he spent the rest of his life.

The coffee pot is script engraved within underside of footrim “C.W. Crocker”.

Each piece is struck beneath base :

The set, high Victorian with tower finials & suspension cable spout detail, comprises
COFFEE POT (ht 12”; 32.5 troy ounces), struck beneath base: W&H / 900/1000
TEA POT (11”; 28 oz),
COVERED SUGAR (8.25”; 17 oz)
Creamer with hinged lid ((8.5”; 12 oz)
FOOTED BOWL (5”; 11 oz)

plus : OVAL TRAY, paired bearded face handles, Greek key border (Tray does not match the hollow silver, but of the same period and inherited together with the service). Length 33” (including handles) x 19”.
Applied circle mark of Redfield & Rice, New York
177 Broadway New York City, circa 1863-71); the name “Redfield & Rice” is also repeated in a straight line below one handle.

Condition : All original and very good, no evidence of repair nor loss, some slight body dents.
Provenance : a Virginia family
