Hans Hansen (1884-1940) trained as a silversmith from 1903-1906 before opening his own silver flatware and hollowward workshop on the Jutland Peninsula in Denmark.
The firm established its reputation for refined modernist silver jewelry when the son of Hans, Karl Gustav Hansen (b 1914) joined the firm in 1932, designing the firm's first line of jewelry. Upon his father's death in 1940, Karl Gustav took over the business.
Well-known Danish modernist designers were employed, cementing the place of Hans Hansen among mid-century Scandinavian silver producers.
Bent Gabrielsen Pedersen worked there between 1953 and 1969 and was artistic director from 1962, during which time he won the Lunning prize (thought of as the ‘Nobel’ prize for Scandinavian design) and a gold medal for design at the Milan Triennial; also employed were Bent Knudsen, and Allan Scharf, who was the leading designer by the 1980s before going on to design for Georg Jensen.
In 1991 the company merged with Georg Jensen, after which many Hansen designs continued in production.
Marks : Cypher marks "HH", "HaH", and a facsimile "Hans Hansen" signature mark were all used interchangeably. Designer signatures were never used.
