The Spectator was a journal of essays on politics and
culture, originally founded by Joseph Addison and
Richard Steele in 1711, London. This 1832 Philadelphia
edition contains the complete 635 essays, the first run
of 555 essays: Thursday March 1, 1711 through Saturday
December 6, 1712 and the revived run of 80 essays from
Friday June 18, 1714 through Monday December 20, 1714.

The Spectator had many avid readers in the American
colonies including Benjamin Franklin and a teenage
James Madison. It continued to be widely read in
the late 18th and 19th centuries.
