PETER LORENTZ 1838, Germantown Ohio's"Weaver Extraordinaire"
PETER LORENTZ 1838 dated & signed JACQUARD COVERLET,
among the early works by the Germantown, Ohio “Weaver Extraordinaire”.
Born about 1801 in France (home of the Jacquard loom) he emigrated to the United States as a young man, working in Greene County, Ohio, Wayne County, Indiana & Montgomery County, Ohio.
Known works date from 1836 to 1847 where he created them, each in two panels, joined for full size. Examples appear today at the Henry Ford Museum.and the Indiana Museum of Art.
His 1834 Germantown home still stands. The Germantown Union Cemetery lists his birth and death dates as 3-29-1801 to 6-2-1876.
Size : 84 x 73” “full coverlet” size, of two original joined panels.
Signature & Date woven into two corners (one white on blue, the other blue on white), overall very good condition : one old hand mend approx 1" diameter, some wear at joint between the panels, one border retains original cochineal dyed tape binding, across from white selvage fringe; the two adjoining sides retain much of original dark blue fringe.
