CARPETBALLS
COLLECTION OF SIX VICTORIAN CARPETBALLS,
Circa 1835 - 1870, unusually fine condition; under-glaze decorated in blue and colors, linear plaid, sponge & cut-sponge decorations. Diameters : approximately 3-1/2” to 2”.
About Carpetballs : Said to be a 19th century indoor alternative to outdoor lawn ball games, for inclement weather. The small size are sometimes called “lady’s size”.
Queen Victoria’s fondness for tartans and all things ‘Scots’ inspired the plaids; the sponged and spatter decorations are similar to those used on dishes.
