GEORGIAN 'TOPAZ' (Scottish "Cairngorm") Madeira Quartz and gold ring

GEORGIAN 'TOPAZ' (Scottish "Cairngorm") gold ring,
circa 1800 - 1810

Center gem : Madeira citrine quartz (tested by refractive index), round faceted with high crown, estimated
1 to 1.25 carat, 6.8 x 7 mm (depth unmeasurable because of the traditional Georgian closed back setting)
The gem with typical abrasions, collet-set within a repousse circle above engraved split shoulders and engraved starburst above flat ribbed band. Overall condition : underside of the gem setting dented, decoration original and fine, overall very good to fine for type and age.

Width tapers from 10 mm around gem to 2.8 mm at base of band

MADEIRA QUARTZ, the gem widely called "topaz' during the Georgian era, by the Scots called "cairngorm" and beloved as the most precious gem of their Cairngorm Mountains

Gold tested : 10k, gross wt .044 troy ounce

Finger size : 7

Provenance : according to the owner, purchased 1990's in Edinburgh
