Fausse Montre (French). Literally, "false watch".
in fashion starting in the late 1700's, when the false watch was worn on the right side, across from a real watch, worn on the left.
-- H. Newman, Illustrated Dictionary of Jewelry
The "Fausse Montre", which did not have a time-keeping movement, might contain a mirror, a pin cushion, or a vinaigrette; by the 1840's it might contain a keepsake or portrait.
