"BRINGING IN THE CATCH"

"BRINGING IN THE CATCH"

FRANCIS E. JAMIESON (British, 1895-1950)
signed lower right with his documented alias "W. Richards"

Outside measurements 20-1/2 x 20"

in period frame, likely original, bronze gilt, gessoed and cove-molded,
Canvas alone 11-1/2 x 20", on stretcher

The artist and the alias
"W. Richards" is a documented alias signature under which Francis Jamieson is known to have painted.
He produced Scottish Highlands landscapes in quantity, apparently on contract with a variety of galleries, during his lifetime.

The paintings of FE Jamieson were so fashionable he was contracted to paint exclusively for various furniture stores painting scenes on furniture. Jamieson is believed to have painted under eleven different artist names so he could sell more of his paintings undetected by his employers. These aliases include J McGregor, Graham Williams, Henry Stewart, and W Richards.

Far rarer, and more sought-after today, are his paintings like the present example, of the fishing community engaged in their activities.
This nice example is in excellent condition (the canvas relined, apparently in the late 1900's)
The painting is nicely titled, and lettered with the artist's alias, on the liner of the frame
(frame restored, and with typical minor losses).
This and its companion painting, "Bringing in the Catch", have descended together in the same private collection.
