Richard Baily (1744-1814), of Thatcham and Newbury, England, was mayor of Newbury, elected in 1773.
Richard Baily's son, astronomer Francis Baily, discovered the solar phenomenon known as “Baily's Beads” in his honor. He was a fellow and president of the Royal Astronomical Society, London.
The young Richard, in 1796, traveled down the Ohio and the Mississippi to New Orleans, and back by the Natchez Trace. His notes were published postumously by colleagues at the Astronomical Society, and reprinted in 1969 by Southern Illinois University Press under the title JOURNAL OF A TOUR IN UNSETTLED PARTS OF NORTH AMERICA IN 1796 AND 1797 BY FRANCIS BAILY, F.R.S.
