Richard Baily (1744-1814), of Thatcham and Newbury, England, was mayor of Newbury, elected in 1773.
His son was the celebrated astronomer Francis Baily, fellow and president of the Royal Astronomical Society, after whom is named the solar phenomenon he discovered, “Baily's Beads”.
The travel notes taken by Francis as a young man (down the Ohio and the Mississippi to New Orleans, and back by the Natchez Trace) were published postumously by colleagues at the Astronomical Society, and reprinted in 1969 by Southern Illinois University Press under the title "Journal of a Tour in Unsettled Parts of North America in 1796 and 1797 by Brancis Baily, F.R.S."
