CELTIC / VIKING REVIVAL Antique 19th century French Penanular Cloak Pin Set, 18k, Southwest France Mont-de-Marsand, 1838-1847

French hallmarks for 18k or higher gold; regional mark for Mont-de-Marsand (now prefecture for Landes, SW France).

Ancient examples were discovered in the first half of the 19th century.
Young Queen Victoria, crowned 1837, proudly wore historical recreations in gold, like this one.

Penanular pins were originally worn with the pin points facing up, and with or without a connecting chain.

Hallmarks appear on each of the four individual parts. Each triangular ornamental head is pierced and hand-engraved in a pattern of scrolls, the tips pierced to support an optional chain.

Length of each pin : approx 2" x 1" wide

Weight : .294 troy ounce the pair
