Ellis worked as an engineer on the Britain's District and Metropolitan Railways before studying art in Paris. He traveled in Syria in 1880, produced a number of Norwegian views around 1893 and visited Cyprus in 1879.
He was a book illustrator and authored his own work On a Raft, and through the Desert which was published in London, in 2 volumes with 38 etched plates plus illustrations in the text, in 1881.
In 1896 and 1898 he traveled in Egypt, Cyprus, Turkey and Russia.
A member of the Royal Society of Painters and Etchers, he was exhibiting regularly in London from 1868 to 1893.
