Blue Sapphire Armorial Ring with six Antique Diamonds

BLUE SAPPHIRE ARMORIAL RING, with 6 diamonds, 18k rose gold,
circa 1920

Blue Sapphire, (corundum), of undetermined origin : We are presenting this as a stone of early laboratory-grown origin, but internal characteristics also suggest the possibility of natural sapphire mined in early 1900's in Montana's Yogo Gulch mine

Gem characteristics : 4.5 to 5.0 carats, inverted cabochon cut variant, with polished flat-top, 13 x 11 mm, x 4.9 mm deep; intaglio-carved within border of tiny facets; underside domed, polished with central oval facet flanked by elongated facets. a long diagonal inclusion plane divides a near-colorless growth zone (which highlights the central carving) from zones of good medium "cornflower' blue.

Intaglio -carved armorial : an eagle, wings spread above a shield quartered by a lion rampant, an eagle, a banner (?) & a crown; wear, abrasions & tiny chips to surface; arms unidentified.

Six diamonds : total .10 carat, mixed antique single cuts (average 1.5mm diameter, SI/H-J range) each in gold tube collet, silver-topped, above silver-topped rose gold split shoulders.

Gold tested : 18k; gross wt of ring, .142 troy oz.
