Cup Plates were used from about 1730-1830; when tea was served in small bowls (from the Chinese model, without handles), on a deep underdish.
Tea was poured from the bowl into the underdish, and drunk from the underdish. The bowl was then set in the cup plate.
Davenport
John Davenport (b 1765) began as a potter in 1785. In 1793 or 1794 he acquired his own pottery at Longport in Staffordshire, England. Earliest marks include “Davenport” (upper and lower case, impressed) used until 1810, when the letters changed to all upper case.
Variations with an anchor appear with the name, impressed, from the earliest period and somewhat later, as do various printed variations.
