Born in Porto Maurizio near Genoa, in 1819 he moved to Naples, where he trained initially in the ‘camera lucida’. His earliest works were academically correct oils in the panoramic tradition.
Turning to watercolor and sepia, he developed the freer more spontaneous technique for which he became known, especially for their light touch and evocative use of diffused light and shadow.
He published a series of lithographs in a “Viaggio pittorico nel Regno delle Due Sicilie” (1829–1834), was awarded a knighthood of the Order of Francesco I of the Two Sicilies and an honorary professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples.
In 1848 he moved to Benevento some 30 miles north ot Naples.
