Little is recorded about his early life; he is thought to have been born in England around the mid 19th century. By the 1890's he was painting in New York and New Jersey.
He is known as a painter of Indian figures including Navajos of Arizona and Pueblo Indians of New Mexico, mostly done during the 1890 to 1910 period.
